The PICOPILOT-SP (self-programming) is a low cost, simple autopilot that does not require a computer to program waypoints. The -SP is capable of storing 32 waypoints however programming is performed by first, manually flying your route in "record mode". The system includes a NAV2 board ( -SP firmware) and a GPS receiver. The -SP is ideal for RC hobbists and those interested in trying autonomous flight for the first time. PICOPILOT was designed for rudder-only, electric motor-gliders (without ailerons ) but it can be adapted to control slow, stable planes (with ailerons). We selected only the features necessary to perform basic autonomous control and navigation. The circuit board is designed to interface directly to a standard RC receiver, providing the control and enable channels.
Specifications
PCB Size: 2.0"L x 1.0"W x 0.35"H
PCB Weight: 0.6oz ( 1.7oz with PICO-GPS )
Max Airspeed: 50 mph (depends on airframe stability )
Min. Airspeed: 5 mph
Turn radius: ~100ft @ 25mph
Attitude control loop: 3 Hz
Power: 5.0v - 7.0v @ 25ma ( idle )
NOTE: The -SP requires a three position switch or linear RC channel (FLAP) for the ENABLE. This autopilot is limited to visual range since all waypoints are programmed by first flying the route under manual control.
The -SP does not include altitude-hold, however an ALT3 can be added to perform that function. The -SP will NOT "allow a model aircraft to be flown to a selected location which is beyond the visual range of the pilot".
